Course Overview
This course is designed for barpersons working in licensed premises in England and Wales. It equips the barperson with a clear understanding of licensing law as it applies to people working behind the bar. The Barperson's National Certificate serves as a stand-alone qualification and also forms one unit of the Professional Barperson's Qualification.

A certificate awarded by the BIIAB . This provides evidence of the applicant's knowledge and understanding of basic licensing law and the social responsibilities attached to the sale of alcohol.

What is the course duration?
This is a self-study qualification and can be taken at your own pace, but the examination must be taken within six weeks of registering.

It is designed for barpersons working in licensed premises in England and Wales.

What topics are covered?

• Why licenses are needed to sell alcohol, who grants licences to sell alcohol, who holds the licence and why barpersons must help the licensee to keep to the law
• when alcoholic drinks can be sold and what drinking-up time means
• the law about alcohol and young people
• amusement machines and the control of their use
• the law relating to betting on licensed premises
• the law relating to the sale of tobacco to young persons
• how to check someone's age
• who has the right to enter licensed premises, who can be ejected from premises, who can be refused service in licensed premises and what an Exclusion Order is
• the requirements of the Weights and Measures Act, including the legal measures for the service of draught beer and cider, whisky, gin, rum and vodka, and wine
• which drinks are controlled by law, how the strength of a drink is measured and what a unit of alcohol is
• how the body reacts to alcohol and removes alcohol
• the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and how the licensee can be supported in tackling drugs on licensed premises
• the signs of drug activity
• the circumstances which may lead to violence on licensed premises, how trouble can be prevented and what to do when trouble starts
• when credit can be used to buy drinks
• how barpersons can help to promote social responsibility in the use of alcohol
• how to act responsibly over 'happy hours'
• the Pubwatch scheme

Is there an examination?
An automated telephone multiple choice question test, which is accessed via a PIN (personal identification number). There are thirty questions and twenty one correct answers are needed to pass. The test can be taken via the telephone 24 hours a day. A demonstration line is available on 0900 7771110.
The call is charged at premium rate (50p per minute) and the duration of the call is just over 3 minutes.
